The spritzing hour

Take a peek at the juicy summer entry from Jane Rakison's drinks diary
Summer spritz

When golden hour calls for a light and refreshing sip, something spritzy is the answer

Creating a sensational spritz is just the kind of summer-solstice sorcery that bewitches me, and I’m not alone. In the last decade or so, the spritz has firmly embedded itself in the British summer-drinking psyche.

Simple though a spritz is, there’s something mesmerising about a glass packed with ice and effervescence. But peak refreshment is just one of the many qualities of this type of drink. Versatility is also part of its appeal. Whether its base is beer, cider, wine or a spirit, every spritz can be lifted and lengthened with the right balance of mixers, fruits and herbs. A creative attitude towards mixing produces even more adventurous flavour combinations.

Perhaps best of all, spritzy drinks are disarmingly easy to make and far simpler than their polished appearance suggests. And they can be elevated in any number of ways: beautiful glassware, uniquely shaped ice cubes, neat garnishes and quality straws are just a few of the tools at your disposal. Follow these simple steps and consider effortless summertime entertaining nailed.

Here are four spritz recipes to try this summer: Pinkmead Coastal Pink Collins, Swanaford Mojito Spritz, Lost and Grounded Sun Chaser Spritz, and Nc’nean Whisky Six.
