Sculptural art meets culinary craft at Broomhill Art Hotel
An award winning restaurant, country house hotel and contemporary art gallery surrounded by curious sculpture gardens and glorious wooded green valley: Broomhill Art Hotel isn’t your average rural retreat.
For 20 years owners Rinus and Aniet van de Sande have filled the Victorian house and gardens with one of the South West’s largest collections of contemporary sculpture and art, with over 300 pieces from 60 artists both inside and out.
The couple’s creativity spans to the kitchen where Rinus crafts a rustic menu of European-focused fare. Family-style sharing dishes and tapas-inspired small plates draw on local and seasonal ingredients, with delights such as duck leg confit cassoulet and pork belly with chorizo and fava bean mash.
After an alfresco afternoon tea overlooking the gardens, wander amongst the ferns, ancient oaks and meandering streams to discover a thought-provoking assortment of work and spot woodland wildlife hiding between the striking structures. The quirky collection includes pieces from internationally renowned artists such as Ronald Westerhuis, Giles Penny, Greta Berlin and Sandy Brown.
Creatively-inclined visitors will love spending a night among artwork in one of the eight individually designed bedrooms. A stone’s throw from Barnstaple and a swift motor from the surfer-thronged north Devon beaches, Broomhill makes an inspiring base from which to explore the region’s eclectic mix of coast and country.
