Should you find yourself in the Quantock Hills in need of a delicious detour, Clavelshay Barn, an award-winning restaurant set well off the beaten track on a family-run dairy farm in North Petherton, is well worth a visit. Housed in a picturesque, traditional stone barn dating from around 1700, Clavelshay Barn Restaurant offers country cooking with a contemporary twist.

Under the watchful eye of experienced French head chef, Olivier Certain, only the finest sustainable ingredients from local suppliers are used to create memorable menus that change as the seasonal foods do.

Some of the food is even more local – sourced direct from the farm itself. It’s part of the restaurant’s ethos that produce from the farm is used whenever available, such as beef, veal, pork and vegetables and herbs from the garden. Bread is made daily and even the water on the table is from the farm’s own spring. If you fancy a stronger tipple, the restaurant also offers fine wine as well as local beers and ciders at the bar.

While the menu maybe small, Olivier’s flair means you’ll find food packed full of ‘Taste of the West’ awarding-winning flavour. With dishes such as wild mushroom open ravioli, Lyme Bay crab and saffron tart and rich Valrhona chocolate mousse gracing the menu, your only problem will be narrowing the tempting options down to just one.

The peaceful, idyllic surroundings lend themselves perfectly to special occasions. If you need an excuse to visit, Clavelshay Barn’s cookery school courses and art and craft workshops run regularly throughout the year are something rather exciting to look out for.
