The simple, pared-back surroundings at Full Court Press ensures nothing detracts from the coffee. It also means you’ll get the full attention of owner Mat North, whose focus on the details is exemplary.
Mat is fluent in the science behind coffee (his background is in physics), but he also has an uncanny ability to identify and describe every flavour in his regularly changing single origin offerings.
Apart from a striking stained-glass window at the back of the shop and the La Marzocco machine, the main feature is two boards detailing the day’s coffee offerings of two espresso and two filter options – with tasting notes.
‘My aim is to present coffee in a more considered manner, treating it as a specialist ingredient,’ says Mat. Food is also perfectly pared-back, with a small range of cakes, including gluten-free options and pastries from Bristol’s Hart’s Bakery. Mat is always sourcing artisan coffee, and his range of roasters include Tate, Round Hill, James Gourmet, Workshop, Nude, Square Mile, Clifton, Little and Long, Extract, Origin, Caravan, Notes and Drop Coffee.
