Classic country house hotel and fabulous fine dining restaurant
Set in 20 acres of ancient woodland and rolling hills, a visit to Holbrook House in Wincanton is like stepping back in time to a more glamorous age.
Straddling the Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire boarders, the 13th century Georgian country house hotel is packed with authentic, old school elements, from the original silk lampshades to the huge mounted stags head and stuffed birds in a glass cases.
The 21 bedrooms offer lovely views of the rural surrounds and come with all the crisp linen, fresh fruit and soft cotton bathrobes required to make this feel like delightfully luxurious stay.
We think it’s the food that you should really visit for though, as head chef Paul Hidson and team at Holbrook’s two AA rosette Cedar Restaurant, craft an exceptional collection of seasonal dishes. Expect flair and excellent execution in the cooking of dishes that use local produce with aplomb. Polished silver cloches are lifted to reveal signature plates such as fillet of beef with celeriac, and whisky cured smoked salmon. The desserts are especially noteworthy, with numerous elements (sorbet, tart, tulles, fruit crisps, coulis etc.) creating a sweet n’sharp, crisp and silky interplay of flavours and textures. Service is formal and friendly and be sure to begin your dinner with a cocktail and canapes in front the crackling log fire for the full country house experience.
You don’t have to be a resident to eat and don’t miss the opportunity to go on a Sunday for a top notch family roast lunch. There’s also a more informal menu to complement the fine dining a la carte dishes.
If you are staying, you can swim off your over-indulgence in the heated indoor pool, visit the fitness suite, or simply unwind in the hotel’s steam room and sauna. For the ultimate relaxation break, book a treatment in the health spa – we reckon the traditional full body Swedish massage finished off with a body polish should do it.
The unspoiled Wiltshire Downs are right on the hotel’s doorstep, get exploring and discover the white horses carved into the hillside.
