If rural charm, splendid surroundings and handcrafted dishes sound like the perfect ingredients for a deliciously indulgent weekend, you’ll want to schedule a trip to South Petherton and New Farm Restaurant.

Wanting to create a cosy space where visitors could feast on local fare and stay for a peaceful break, proprietors Jane and Crispin Bond converted the impressive Hamstone building (once part of Jane’s family’s working farm) into a characterful restaurant with rooms. For the past 25 years the duo has welcome intrepid eaters to their Somerset hideaway, and in 2018 their warm welcomed was recognized when they scooped No 1 Place To Go and two other gongs in the Taste of the West awards.

The bright and beautiful restaurant is a family-run affair: Jane heads up the kitchen, while sister Sue looks after front of house and Crispin crafts the heavenly homemade bread. Jane likes to cook to the seasonal calendar, keeping ingredients super local and combing the surrounding gardens, hedgerows and orchards for foraged finds.

Within the spacious country-style restaurant, original fixtures (think beams, brickwork and farmhouse doors) make a characterful backdrop to an intimate meal. Take your time over the day’s menu and mull over tempting dishes such as Langport lamb with wild garlic and pistachio pesto, and king scallops with black pudding, lemon and dill. Finish off with the lip-smackingly good lavender meringue with rhubarb sorbet and pair with one of the local gins, beers or ciders.

Avoid the cross-country trek home and book an overnight stay in one of the three comfy bedrooms. After a restful slumber, potter downstairs to a delicious breakfast and relax in the tranquility of the countryside before leaving this little slice of serenity.
