Seaside chic on the popular Roseland Peninsula
Idyllically situated on the waterfront in the heart of this ancient Cornish fishing port, the St Mawes Hotel attracts a lively and exciting mix of clientele from the locals, fishermen and villagers who head here to relax after work, to holidaymakers and day trippers in search of seaside serenity and fun.
The feel of the place, alone, is conducive to heady harbourside hedonism. Hotel owner Karen Richards’ stylish and quirky decor, which includes nautical paraphernalia, bare boards and ultra-comfy blue stripped sofas, make it a relaxing spot to kick back with friends and family next to cosy fires. The bedrooms, too, are artful decorated with a jolly seaside joie-de-vivre in keeping with beach-side views and the mesmeric sound of waves lapping onto the shore below.
The bar restaurant makes for a convivial escape where you can enjoy authentic Cornish dishes showcasing fresh-from-the-sea dishes such as roast whole plaice with seaweed butter, brown shrimp, new potatoes and cucumber; or pizzas and smaller plates of local specialities.
Indulgent puddings such as dark chocolate delice with pecan praline will add to your smug post-dinner grin.
Grab an alfresco terrace table to make the most of sunny days (the Fal estuary is one of the county’s most celebrated sun traps), while the Upper Deck is a great spot for cloud and sea watching on a stormy afternoon.
In the lower deck, live music from local singer songwriters feature regularly on Saturday nights. Be prepared for a relaxed yet lively atmosphere: music playing, guests chatting, cocktails being shaken and a great choice of beers, spirits and hot and cold drinks.
The village lies on the Roseland Peninsula, making this dog-friendly hotel (the informal sister property to the nearby The Idle Rocks) a great base from which to explore sandy beaches and coastal walks.
Don’t miss the cool and intimate 25-seater cinema where you can enjoy a meal followed by a movie. There’s also an ultra sleek Courtyard room, ideal if you are planning a special event.
