Country glamour in central Truro
Hidden in a serene hillside spot, yet still within walking distance of the Cornish capital, The Alverton Hotel’s just-off-the-beaten-track location is just one of the reasons why seasoned weekenders flock to its historic door.
In a previous guise, the Grade II-listed building was the family home of Royal Horticultural Society president William Tweedy and then a convent for the Sisters of the Epiphany order. While careful refurbishment since has added luxe mod-cons and stylish furnishings, its architectural beauty has remained thanks to interiors designed to complement the original fixtures and fittings.
The prospect of a weekend at The Alverton Hotel is made even sweeter by its impressive foodie offering. The two AA rosette restaurant is relaxed yet elegant, and is open for brunch (bottomless, we might add), lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. For gastronomic thrills, we’d recommend plumping for the evening a la carte menu where head chef Simon George’s culinary talent really shines.
Simon is as enthusiastic about creativity as he is about sourcing, and the impeccably fresh produce landing in his kitchen makes the most of Cornish coast and crop. Signature dishes include crab linguine and lamb three ways.
In summer, a pre-dinner drink on the terrace overlooking the vibrant gardens is a must. A carefully curated range of local spirits guides guests on a tour of Cornwall’s artisans and are especially delicious when crafted into one of the signature cocktails.
Fifty-one individually designed bedrooms and suites offer a gorgeous base from which to explore Cornwall. A stay in the Chapel Suite promises comfort and chic in equal measures: unwind in the in-room roll-top copper bath as the sunlight fades through the stained-glass window above.
