All-day dining overlooking Padstow’s historic harbour
An invitation to breakfast in a basement isn’t something we’d usually accept, then again basements don’t usually deal in locally-laid eggs and carefully poured coffee or harbour courtyard seating with views over Padstow Quay.
The former net store was once part of the sailmakers and merchants quarter which stood at the heart of the fishing town; today the cafe, bar and restaurant hybrid honours its nautical past with a locally sourced menu which draws on the dayboats’ catch.
Whether you visit early for a full Cornish over the papers, swing by midday to partake in a lazy lunch of Padstow crab sandwiches or toast your new holiday date night destination with a glass of Camel Valley brut, The Basement’s casual vibes and super friendly staff means there’s a good chance you’ll be returning for round two.
Everything from the marmalade slathered on freshly baked Da Bara bread to the pistachio ice cream accompanying the gorgeously gooey dark chocolate fondant is made from scratch by head chef Steven Shore and his energetic team. Steven and crew love nothing more than chucking a Cornwall-reared steak on the grill or getting creative with a sparkling hunk of hake, so taking advantage of the daily specials and seasonal dishes is a must.
Monthly curry nights from resident Indian chef Reggie feature recipes passed down from his mother in Mumbai and are as popular with the locals as with the lucky holidaymakers chancing upon the popular gatherings. Don’t fret if your visit doesn’t coincide with the next knees up as Reggie’s Goan monkfish curry is a regular on the main menu.
The Sunday roast is always a sell out so get there early for your fill of West Country beef, crispy potatoes and Padstow Farm veggies.
