The Berry Head Hotel

Foodie hotel with idyllic views over the Devon coast

Nestled on the water’s edge in six acres of gardens and woodland, the Berry Head Hotel is a truly picturesque spot on the South West Coast Path. With unobstructed views across Tor Bay and the Devon coast, this listed ex-military hospital not only forms a fantastic setting to relax and unwind but delivers delicious local food in its award winning restaurant.

Whether you chose to dine in the a la carte restaurant, or opt for the less formal View Brasserie, there’s beautiful panoramic views of the coast to be enjoyed. With contemporary Mediterranean influences winding through the menu, chef Emil Toderov crafts a range of exciting dishes where fish and seafood reign supreme.

A stone’s throw away from the harbour town of Brixham, the local fish markets stock the hotel’s kitchen with the morning’s catch, so you know it’s going to be impeccably fresh. On warm days, take advantage of the hotel’s location and dine alfresco on the terrace overlooking the sparkling waters below.

With 32 rooms, this family run hotel has a real emphasis on attention to detail, making for a comfortable and welcoming stay. There are weekly events, including steak nights and barbecue lunches, and an indoor swimming pool to keep you entertained too.

The hotel is also a popular venue for weddings, special occasions and functions, catering for up to 200 in the Mulberry Room and adjacent walled garden.

Insider’s tips

The hotel is over 200 years old and was built as a military hospital during the Napoleonic Wars. It later became the home of Rev Henry Francis Lyte who wrote the hymn Abide with Me in the hotel grounds. He also ran a school there, where, incidentally, the Victorian Prime Minister, Lord Salisbury, was educated.
