The Catherine Wheel

Picturesque village pub just outside Bath

Mention ‘Bobbykins’ in the bar of The Catherine Wheel and the regulars will know exactly what you’re talking about. And it’s precisely because this is a real locals’ pub with community spirit that it provides such a taste of English country life.

You’ll find it in the village of Marshfield just outside of Bath – a perfect period drama setting with golden stone Elizabethan, Georgian and Victorian buildings which jostle cheek by jowl along the High Street. Of course the setting makes the pub a magnet for visitors too and you’ll often find walkers by the wood burner who’ve done the extra miles to enjoy a hearty lunch and pint of Cotswold Spring’s Stunner.

The food’s a big draw for everyone, and the Wheel offers traditional homecooked pub food such as steak and kidney pie and lasagne and chips, alongside contemporary dishes such as Moroccan lamb stew with rocket, apricot and tomato couscous, and antipasti of cured meats, olives and homemade breads.

The common denominator is quality and everything is made on site – from gnocchi, to cheesecake, to pastry. Sit in the bar or dining room with their large period windows, stripped wooden tables and Farrow and Ball painted walls and you might be lunching at any time in the pub’s 350-year-old history.

Bobbykins loved it too – ask the regulars to tell you about the Christmas story involving a glamorous blonde, an astonished wife and a pint in the lap. It’s better than an episode of The Archers.

Insider’s tips

The Catherine Wheel is close to the historic maritime port of Bristol and the elegant Georgian city of Bath. Why not book a session at Bath’s Thermae Spa and experience the thermal spas, just as the Celts and Romans did over 2000 years ago?
