Seafood lovers’ paradise in the pretty Cornish town of Porthleven
There can be few things as exhilarating as an alfresco lunch of fresh-from-the-sea dishes overlooking Porthleven’s picturesque horseshoe harbour. The terrace at The Square is where you can feel the salty sea breeze and rays of Cornish sunshine on your face while enjoying snatched-from-the-waves seafood.
The something-for-everyone menu also includes beautifully crafted British seaside classics such as fish and chips, BLTs and charcuterie platters – winsome family-friendly fare with quality Cornish credentials that can be relished, inside or outside, from noon until 2pm.
Visitors trawling the harbour market for vintage finds or pottering around Porthleven’s eclectic mix of shops and galleries can break their day with a spot of people watching at The Square, which serves coffee and cake all day from 11am. Day-trippers certainly won’t want to leave without stocking up cheeses, charcuterie and foodie gifts from the adjoining Deli and Ice Cream Emporium; or miss out on a cone of owners’ Anna and Stewart Eddy’s handmade sorbet – a fruit-filled scoop that’s just divine.
For an even more full-on foodie experience, the sumptuous evening menu, served from 6pm, is a chance to sup on the likes of slow cooked primrose herd pork belly offset with black pudding, crispy polenta and roast celeriac. While seafood connoisseurs can be guaranteed of a rollicking good time with inventive dishes like Porthleven crab with curry spices, minty cucumber raita, yoghurt dressing and flatbread.
Follow that with homemade pudding (think along the lines of dark chocolate mousse with a choccie crumble) and The Square is a harbourside destination, worth setting the SatNav for.
Food lovers, revellers and outdoor enthusiasts will find plenty to do in this pretty fishing village. Visit in April for Porthleven’s two-day food festival, which attracts a clutch of celebrity chefs, local food producers and live bands.
Or, for a more back-to-nature experience set out on a bracing coastal jaunt towards Loe Pool (the largest natural freshwater lake in Cornwall).
