Step aboard for a first class dining experience with a difference

Locals in the know flock to the old West Bay Station – but it’s not the morning commute they’re rushing for. This particular platform is a little different: it’s been transformed into a destination dining must-visit.

Award winning local caterers Sausage & Pear (run by husband and wife team Ross and Claire Moore) took on the spot in 2015 and have conducted operations with aplomb. As head chef, Claire crafts vibrant and crowd-pleasing dishes, giving a contemporary twist to tried-and-tested classics.

Wander down the platform and into the eclectically-decorated station house. Spend some time browsing the cocktail menu and imbibing the vintage-cool surroundings before quaffing a pre-dinner aperitif (or two).

Then board the beautifully renovated World War I train carriage – all wooden panels and quirky objet d’art – for the main event. It’s full of soul and character, yet cosy enough for date night or an overdue catch-up.

As befits its seaside setting, seafood is the speciality here: tuck into pan-seared scallops with parma ham crisps, or bag an updated take on classic fish and chips via gingerbeer battered hake.

Don’t miss the dessert stop either: decadent delights include white chocolate and Irish liqueur cheesecake, and lemon tart with blackberry and vodka coulis.

Insider’s tip

Push the boat out and order the grilled whole lobster with lemon and garlic butter – when in Dorset and all that.
