The Swan

Beautiful historic pub with rooms on the edge of Exmoor

Some places need shouting about, and if you’ve never heard of The Swan – tucked away in the small Exmoor town of Bampton – consider this a blast with a loud hailer.

Paul and Donna Berry have taken the oldest pub in the village and created the kind of pub most of us dream of discovering. Historic building updated in comfortable and contemporary way? Check. Warm and efficient service from a team that knows what it’s doing? Check. Great wine list and pride in sourcing South West ales alongside continental beers in the bar? Check. And last, but not least: very good food.

Paul runs the kitchen himself with all of the care that comes from being the pub’s owner, and he understands exactly what the customers want: ‘We’re feeding a farming community,’ he says, ‘so the portions have to be generous.’ It’s certainly not a case of quantity over quality, with mains such as braised sticky pork belly with sweet potato, roasted vegetables, and confit leg of duck, orange and pine nut with thyme roasted root vegetables, created by Paul with skill and experience, and using locally sourced produce.

Expect to find the place bustling, especially on the weekend when it’s well loved by locals for the welcoming atmosphere and great suppers. It’s also an ideal spot to plan a walk on Exmoor – whether you’re treating yourself to lunch after a jaunt, or walking off the excesses of a good lunch with a homemade pud such as lemon meringue tart with rich biscuity base, rich tart filling and ostentatious crown of caramelised italian meringue.
