Opened in 1903, the impressive building was the first purpose-built hotel in the regency resort, famous for its stunning gardens, esplanade and golden sands.

And when it comes to being spoilt by the sea, there are two dining options to choose from.  Will it be the elegant surroundings of the AA rosette Jubilee Restaurant where the resident pianist creates an ambiance of refined luxury? Or more relaxed dining in the White Room, where head chef Stuart White’s contemporary dishes are concocted with classic French flair?

Many of the rooms have breathtaking views over Lyme Bay and, unsurprisingly, a fair few of the guests like to slip on a robe and take the lift straight down to the ground-floor spa to enjoy facials, massage and the heated indoor pool. While in summer it’s the lure of the outdoor pool or a round at Sidmouth Golf Club that attract.
