It’s a good job that there are eight luxe bedrooms – plus a gorgeous holiday cottage – at The Queens Arms at Corton Denham, as designated drivers are mysteriously hard to come by at the popular country pub come the weekend.
It could be the collection of more than 50 whiskies and 30 gins behind the bar, or the pleasingly local bill of vineyards stocking the wine list but chances are it’s The Queens Arms’ new bottomless brunch that’s sparked a Sherborne-wide chauffeur shortage on Saturdays.
Breakfast-inspired dishes such as potato hash with bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise served at the sociable sessions are worth getting out of bed for, while the unlimited supply of sparkling wine and bloody marys warrant booking one of the five star bedrooms for the evening.
The boozy brunch also provides the perfect excuse for a spontaneous weekend away. Spend the rest of the afternoon exploring the Somerset/Dorset border – or sampling the house ale Legless Liz and homemade pork pies in the sunny beer garden – before a feast of rural fine dining at The Queens’ two AA rosette restaurant.
The green-fingered chefs use ingredients from the kitchen garden, along with seasonal fruit and veg from nearby farms, to create a next-level pub line-up. Carefully curated combinations including duck with rhubarb, fennel and dill sit beside greedy classics like chicken and ham pie with roasted cumin carrots on a menu which changes monthly.
