If a trip to the Caribbean is off the cards, recreate a slice of the tropics by sipping locally crafted spiced rum in your garden
2020 has been rebranded the year of the staycation and, instead of jetting off around the world, we’re rediscovering the natural wonders on our doorsteps. Happily, in addition to having some of the best beaches, rural splendor and buzzy cities in the UK, the South West is also home to a wealth of food and drink producers which add to its rich culture.
In a quiet corner of Devon, Two Drifters Distillery crafts rum to rival the traditional sips which are more usually distilled in the Caribbean. And, unlike other producers that import the base spirit and then merely flavour it in the UK, founders Russ and Gemma Wakeham craft their rums entirely from scratch, using ingredients such as 100 per cent molasses.
Not only are the duo shaking up the local spirit game, they’re also modelling how to distil sustainably. Two Drifters is the world’s first carbon-negative distillery as the building, equipment and delivery van use 100 per cent green electricity with any emissions offset via Direct Air Capture (which turns CO2 into chalk).
‘It’s groundbreaking … we’ve demonstrated that it is possible to produce a successful premium quality rum and have a carbon-negative footprint at the same time,’ says Russ.
The distillery’s new Overproof Spiced Pineapple Rum is perfect for summer sipping, delivering a slice of the tropics with notes of sweet caramel and spiced vanilla. Drink it straight over ice (go easy, its ABV is a whopping 63 per cent) or serve with quality ginger beer and a squeeze of fresh lime for a punchy Dark and Stormy.
