Picture the scene: you, three friends, a perfectly chilled bottle of zesty white, three sensational courses and – wait for it – no washing up. Sounds like the perfect Friday night, right?

Sociable suppers fuelled by phenomenal food and noteworthy wines are somewhat of a speciality at The Old Quay House. The hotel’s enviable location on the banks of the Fowey Estuary may be the bait which lures city types and staycationers to its shore, but it’s the relaxed-in-an-indulgent-kind-of-way dining experience that inspires return trips and tempts locals to lunch.

On sunny spring days, the terrace hosts the best seats in the house, though the smart restaurant with its contemporary decor and laid-back buzz is no compromise if the weather’s not playing ball.

General manager Julio De Carvalho sees to it that service is slick but not rushed, so diners can peruse the lengthy wine list and seasonal dishes at a pleasingly tranquil pace.

Whatever the result of the menu musing, it’s a safe bet that your supper will be impressively local. As April approaches, warmer temperatures welcome rhubarb, purple sprouting broccoli and locally-landed pollock to head chef Richard Massey’s kitchen, where he gets creative with flavour, texture and plating. A pudding of white chocolate tart with honey oats and griottine cherries, for instance, is as exciting to eat as it is to admire.
