Food Reader Awards Best Chef 2019 Dave Jenkins is ripping up the restaurant rule book at his Plymouth brasserie – and you could be one of the first to sample the fresh set-up.
We all know it’s hard to predict what you’ll be in the mood to eat at a restaurant booking two weeks ahead – will it be the full tasting menu experience or a more simple supper? Rock Salt totally get this, so they’re changing the game – and their menu – to put diners in charge of their foodie destiny.
‘We want our customers to choose how they want to eat,’ explains Dave. ‘We’re really comfortable with being a casual dining spot but we’ve also got the skills to offer a finer tasting menu experience if that’s what a table wants. We aim to be as flexible as possible so we’re adopting a fresh perspective.’
The new menu and chilled-out attitude allow diners to take the lead and decide whether dinner at Rock Salt is going to be a let’s-see-how-polite-we-really-are sharing situation or a more formal three course affair. Whatever you plump for, you’ll find Dave’s passion for West Country produce and international inspiration on every plate.
Want a flavour of what’s to come if you’re the lucky winner of this month’s competition? (Caution: hunger pangs incoming.) Fresh dishes on the all-day line-up include: salt and vinegar doughnuts with caviar, cucumber and smoked mackerel; Devon beef buns with beef jus, garlic, mushrooms and cauliflower; and Chiang Mai pork belly with king prawns, papaya, peanuts, lime and crackling. Of the plant-based persuasion? Vegans get their own menu which doesn’t skimp on creativity or palate-popping flavours.
