Hinton Hideaways, Somerset

Slow down and reconnect with nature with a cabin break at Hinton Hideaways’ five luxury properties: The Birdhouse, The Hide, Owl Cabin, The Nest and Hidden House. They are housed within 260 acres of peaceful organic farmland in the Somerset countryside near Chard, close to the Devon and Dorset borders.

Any of the cabins are an excellent choice for finding space and peace, but we love Hidden House (pictured) for its boutique quality and wrapping of local cedar giving it a distinct feel of the tropics. Rooted on timber legs, the cabin greets you at ground level while the living spaces project three metres above the ferns.

wildcomfort, Devon

Overlooking the idyllic Start Bay coastline and just a few minutes walk from Blackpool Sands blue flag beach, wildcomfort’s Birdhouse cabins and The Lookout are hidden inside a secret seaside garden woodland.

Each has its own private bathroom and private decking with astonishing views of the sea and woodland. These cabin breaks pair a wild off-grid location with comfort and style, and are only a short walk from crystal waters, plus a beach cafe and sauna.

Rest + Wild, Devon

Wind down in remote and rugged Exmoor, one of Britain’s most untamed landscapes, with a stay at Rest + Wild. Its five cabins, spread across four fields to ensure privacy, are each designed for two people (with space for a travel cot). They include a king-size bed (with breathtaking bedside views), firepit, outdoor copper bathtub, rainfall showers and complimentary Wildsmith products.

Opt for a Best of British food hamper as an add-on, which includes options like a hearty breakfast, creamy mushroom risotto or sizzling bavette steak. Could there be a more delicious way of easing into a stay than lighting the firepit, slipping into the outdoor tub, then cooking up a warming feast?

The cabins are designated switch-off zones, and as such there’s no wifi. Dogs are welcome and will adore the plentiful walking, ocean dipping and river splashing to be relished nearby.

Halvana Forest Shed, Cornwall

With a basin made from a river boulder and beams made from trees felled in nearby woods, Halvana is certainly at one with its environment on Bodmin Moor. The rich colours of the open-plan space downstairs give a frontier-lodge feel, although you’re more likely to encounter the occasional friendly pony as opposed to a moose. Upstairs, a low-ceilinged mezzanine is a cosy space for relaxing and birdwatching, although take the lounging outdoors on the hammock to enjoy the chorus at full volume.

There’s also a swing and a firepit, the latter complete with a box of Fireside Fancies (a few things to encourage some wild cookery). When adventure calls, the surrounding moor’s many walking routes beckon.

Escape Off The Grid, Dorset

In Dorset’s Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of Plush, Escape Off The Grid’s Aslan cabin is a tiny off-grid eco home designed to encourage guests to embrace adventure-and-chill time.

This particular slice of Narnia (Escape Off The Grid’s other cabins – in locations including the Cotswolds, East Sussex and Canterbury – bear names such as Reepicheep, Caspian and Susan) overlooks rolling Dorset countryside and is completely off grid. That doesn’t mean it skimps on comfort and style, though. The dark-stained timber home is well insulated with a wood burner and has a studio-style interior which is all light wood and large windows.

Aslan may feel a world away from civilisation but is just a couple of minutes from a pub, hiking trails and wild swimming opportunities.
