Houseplant shops

There's no such thing as too many houseplants, right?
Botanica Studio, 5 of the best houseplant shops

Whether you’re searching for a particular plant species to add to your growing collection, creating your home jungle from scratch, or want to gift someone a flowering succulent, discover a plethora of healthy plants at these boutique houseplant shops in the South West

Botanica Studio, Bath

Botanica Studio might’ve started as a small seedling – a little market stall in 2017 – but in 2020 it bloomed into this beloved bricks-and-mortar shop in central Bath.

As much a sanctuary as it is a shop, the verdant space (every inch bursts to life with some form of gorgeous plant species) draws the city’s residents and visitors alike. Founder Alice Dobie is a dab hand at curating the extensive range that fills the shop, and works alongside a creative team who help keep the foliage healthy and provide bespoke advice for customers. From which plant will best suit a space to how to care for it in years to come, both green-fingered bods and plant rookies can learn something from the pro team.

Don’t leave without having a snoop of plant paraphernalia such as terracotta pots, inspo-packed books, products to promote soil health and a rather lovely Botanica-branded tote. A variety of workshops, including succulent garden-making, terrarium-making (for under 21s and over) and kokedama moss ball-making are also available.

Nook Houseplants

Nook Houseplants, Plymouth

You don’t need to be a gardening guru to enjoy the experience at this Plymouth houseplant shop. The Nook team promise that their ‘personalised recommendations and tailored aftercare advice can turn a self-confessed plant killer into a green-fingered fiend’.

For some, the drawback of purchasing a new potted pal is the pressure of keeping it alive throughout the seasons, as a result of being too nervous to repot it or lacking the space to do so, but they needn’t fear as Nook has found a solution. The team built an in-house potting bench in the shop, where customers can repot plants themselves (the crew are happy to guide novices through the process) or drop them off for the pros to get to it. In September, Nook is further developing the space with the launch of a cafe next door, which will serve quality coffee and brunch dishes.

Newbie gardener wishing to hone your skills? Check out the curated workshops which range from lessons in plant propagation to crafting your own terrarium or moss garden. Private workshops for parties and corporate events are also available in-store or at a specific location.

Additional services include plant hire for local companies (whether it’s an office, co-working space or cafe, and wedding and party hire), offering a more evergreen option to the less sustainable floral purchases.

Hutch Houseplants

Hutch Houseplants, Exeter

Husband-and-wife team Rob and Frankie established Hutch in 2017 out of a shared passion for all things botanical.

As with many houseplant shops, Hutch started as a pop-up store in the city centre but soon flowered into the stylish jungle it’s celebrated as today (celebrations include multi-award-wins from the RHS, FYI). With thousands of houseplants to pore over, including classic styles, eye-catching finds and rarer varieties, this is a wonderful place to feed your plant obsession.

Bring the outdoors in with a glossy zamioculcas or bushy fern, or showcase your own mini jungle with one of the easy-to-look-after terrariums.

The Planted House

The Planted House, Penzance

Once you’ve stepped into this leafy oasis in Penzance and immersed yourself in its plethora of houseplants, it’s unlikely you’ll leave empty handed.

Owner Antonia Adams has an eye for indoor tropical and subtropical foliage, as well as a wealth of knowledge for keeping the houseplants in vivid-green and lustrous leaf condition. She and her team enjoy suggesting new living finds to self-confessed plantophiles and newbie plant owners, yet curated plant installations for local businesses and public places is where the team thrive.

In addition to plants, customers can explore a stunning variety of homemade wares for plants and home, crafted by The Planted House team. Antonia first explored how she could utilise rattan cane as a sculptural framework for plants in her gold-winning show at RHS Chelsea in 2022 – the result is a one-of-a-kind collection of wire rope hangers and plant holders. There’s also a selection of earthy spherical planters, made using a rich gritty clay, commissioned for the shop by artist Su Leaver.
