Pinkmead Estate and Vineyard, Isle of Wight

Sail across the cool blue waters of the Solent to arrive at your island escape, Pinkmead, an award-winning gem of a getaway on the Isle of Wight. With breathtaking views and serene island vibes, it’s an immersive retreat that blends biodiversity with flashes of luxury, both in the main house (which sleeps up to six) and in its indoor relaxation spaces the Kitchen Garden and Yoga Studio.

Outside, roam free across the 24 acres of grounds, take the pooch on a coastal discovery, ride the scenic path on a Pendleton bike or paddleboard on the river before sinking into a squishy sofa with a well-deserved glass of house gin or wine – the estate makes both. At every turn, quality and sustainability shines through, making it an escape that’s both thoughtful and luxurious.

Sancreed House, Cornwall

Set within landscaped gardens, Sancreed House Retreat is a Grade II-listed Georgian former rectory just outside Newlyn. Once a residence for students and guests of renowned artist John Miller, creative energy still seems to hum throughout this countryside getaway.

Guests staying in the main house for bed and breakfast can stretch out in four-poster beds and admire artwork by local artists before breaking fast on a classic Cornish fry-up or something a little different such as matcha mochi waffles. The three self-catering cottages are a gorgeous choice for romantic escapes and restorative breaks.

For a dose of calm, head to the Garden Spa, where Japanese-style ofuro wooden baths sit among fruit trees and soaring palms. The barrel sauna, hot tub and heated indoor pool are perfect for leisurely dips, while in-room treatments from therapists at Home Spa Cornwall take the self-indulgence up a notch, rounding off Sancreed House’s reputation as a seriously soothing bolthole.

The Collective at Woolsery, Devon

The Collective at Woolsery in North Devon is a refreshing alternative to traditional hotel stays. Blending rustic village charm with boutique comfort and award-winning accommodation, this unique spot has transformed a cluster of local businesses and heritage buildings into a vibrant hospitality destination, all the while keeping its rural soul. Stays range from stylish retro-inspired rooms and suites to larger self-catering cottages with private gardens. Each space has been lovingly restored with a warm mix of period character and modern comfort.

Enjoy fresh-air walks across rolling Devon countryside or head to nearby beaches for cliffside strolls and scenic views. Back in the village, the heart of the experience is The Farmers Arms, a pub serving seasonal, locally sourced fare and craft drinks, often featuring ingredients from the on-site Birch Farm. There’s even a chic fish and chip shop and a village store crammed with artisanal produce from local makers.

Artist Residence, Bristol

For a city escape packed with culture and character, Artist Residence Bristol is hard to beat. This uniquely stylish boutique hotel – with sister properties across the country – sits in Bristol’s St Paul’s neighbourhood and features individually designed rooms. Each space is cleverly peppered with limited-edition artwork and upcycled vintage furniture, set against exposed brickwork and limewashed wall, all of which creates a cosy urban vibe.

Downstairs, its all-day cafe The Boot Factory is an equally happy space. It serves casual plates such as gochujang fried chicken with sesame and lime; poached plums french toast; and pizzette with ‘nduja and hot honey. Local makers are well represented too via Hobbs House pastries and bottles from Avery’s Wine Merchants. The artsy library is the perfect spot for a pre-prandial; it’s stocked with organic, locally sourced wines, Lost and Grounded ales and a short but well-chosen cocktail list. Also, listen out for local musicians cranking up the atmosphere.

Mallinson’s Woodland Retreat, Dorset

For maximum escapism and aesthetic satisfaction, book a luxury treehouse stay at Mallinson’s. Its RIBA award-winning handmade cabins are set among six blissful acres of woodland and four acres of meadow. Each treehouse comes with its own private deck, hot tub and wood-fired pizza oven to really sink into a back-to-nature break with all the creature comforts.

The showstopper choice is The Woodsman’s Treehouse, which may look familiar as it featured on both Grand Designs’ House of the Year and George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces. It comes complete with revolving wood burner, rooftop sauna and hot tub, roll-top copper bath (inside), tree shower and barbecue. Dazzle Treehouse has a distinctive camouflage design, inspired by the patterns used to conceal first world war ships and confuse the enemy. Pinwheel Treehouse is a treetop chalet with a two-person swing, glass-topped living space and facade featuring concentric rings of timber to give a 3D illusion.
