Up your escapism game with accommodation among the vines. Wine, dine and recline at some of the best unique and luxe vineyard stays around

Three Choirs, Newent

The bucolic Gloucestershire countryside is all the more attractive because it’s home to one of England’s oldest vineyards: Three Choirs.

Makers of award-winning sparkling and still wine, Three Choirs is also the location of a seriously dopamine-boosting getaway thanks to rooms and lodges surrounded by tranquil rows of grapes.

Both the Vineyard View rooms and the Vineyard Lodges come with gigantic beds and south-facing patios while on-site restaurant The Brasserie makes evening dining a doddle; after indulging in a meal of tapas-inspired plates and a glass of local (very local) wine, it’s just a hop and a skip back to bed.

The restaurant is also open to the public for lunch, although breakfast is served exclusively for those staying at the winery. During the stay, get the car fully reloaded using one of the on-site EV chargers and dose up on lush local edibles from the winery shop, either to munch on the patio or take home as a delicious memento.

Woodchester Valley, Stroud

Take the Cotswolds experience up a notch by staying at Woodchester Valley, home to award-winning still and sparkling wines, as well as a whole crib of bougie accommodation. All lodgings overlook verdant vines for that fully immersive stay.

The Retreat is a beautifully renovated two-bedroom farmhouse, the luxe Vineyard Barns have a cosy, romantic vibe and the six-bedroom Woodchester Valley House is perfect for groups and multi-gen family stays.

While lush vines can be seen for miles around, the rooms – some of which are pooch-friendly – also feature private terraces for suntrap alfresco dining. The on-site cellar door shop means a glass of wine is never far away, and everyone can get fully wine savvy during the stay by booking a bespoke tasting experience. Expert guides will explain how the wines are crafted and take visitors on a behind-the-scenes vineyard tour.

Castlewood, Musbury

Castlewood has been crafting delicious earth-friendly wines, from vineyards on a Devon hillside overlooking the River Axe, since 2006.

Notwithstanding its reputation for excellent wines and hosting one of the best boutique festivals (now happening every other year, next one – 2026), Castlewood also offers vineyard stays, with accommodation of the classic and not-so-classic kind.

First, the classic. Two exquisitely decorated 18th-century Grade II-listed stone cottages with all the right features: inglenook fireplaces, beamed ceilings and window seats are set among stunning gardens with luscious countryside views.

Alternatively, book the Bluebird bus: a converted 1970s Canadian school bus permanently parked in an idyllic rural setting. Big on the cute factor, authentically retro but beautifully presented, it’s an off-grid couples’ retreat paradise.

Thornfalcon Winery & Press

New-ish kid on the block in Somerset, Thornfalcon joined the growing list of epic South West wineries in 2023.

This 250-year-old farm has been lovingly restored to create a boutique winery and a hospitality experience where visitors are treated to artfully crafted drinks and escapes immersed in nature. All three lodgings generate oohs and ahhs.

The Coach House has been cosily converted, complete with wood-burning stove, walk-in shower and Make by Mary Temperley smellies. Its large open-plan living space is perfect for get-togethers and a private paddock makes this a dog-friendly space too.

The Lambing Shed is a gorgeously private woodland retreat in the heart of the orchards. Its bare wood walls and colourful accessories really big up the chic vibes. Meanwhile, the Shepherd Hut interiors are crammed with antiques, textiles and treasures from European markets. Outdoors, a copper bathtub, firepit and plenty of seating encourages guests to soak up all the Somerset charm.

Sandridge Barton, Totnes

In the heart of South Devon’s Dart Valley, Sandridge Barton’s new estate is not only a thriving winery surrounded by vineyards in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, but it’s home to three super stylish lodgings.

Sandridge Barton House is a gem of a crib for groups. Its beautifully restored six-bedroom farmhouse comes with classic-chic furnishings, a heated indoor pool, a games barn and a terrace for sundowner sipping.

The Boathouse has lo-fi living nailed. This 1850s converted barn on the banks of the River Dart is the peaceful and remote choice, being inaccessible by car. Let the Sandridge Barton team haul the luggage through the willow woodland to get to this quaintly-decorated waterside spot.

Lower Well Farmhouse is a modern-rustic four-bedroom converted farmhouse for eight guests and well-behaved small pooches. Situated right next to the winery, shop and newly-launched Roam restaurant, it’s at the heart of all the wine action.
