There’s magic to be found at The Old Coastguard in the fishing village of Mousehole
From its wooden tables to the palm-fringed terrace, everything leans into its Cornish coastal setting – right down to a menu dictated by whatever Newlyn’s dayboats bring ashore. The hotel, bar and restaurant is part of a small, highly-regarded group that also owns The Gurnard’s Head in Zennor and The Felin Fach Griffin in Wales.
Head chef Danny Garland (ex Ottolenghi) crafts dishes that go well beyond Cornish fish. Local meats, cheeses and inventive plant-based plates all get their due on a casual but accomplished brasserie-style menu serving breakfast, lunch and supper daily.
Feast on dishes such as Cornish mussels with laksa and puffed vermicelli noodles; and Lanhydrock-reared venison with coffee-roasted beetroot. And for easy eats in balmy weather, head to The Crab Shack in the garden for coffee and cake or fresh crab sarnies, loaded fries and mussels.
The restaurant’s Lunch for Less deal is worth knowing about, too. Running Monday to Saturday, it offers keenly priced two- and three-course feasts, including the likes of beef ragu on sourdough toast; bouillabaisse with mussels, potatoes and kale; and roasted plums with sesame ice cream, tahini chantilly and maple filo pastry.
Visitors can stay the night, and with bedrooms featuring Vispring beds and views over Mount’s Bay, The Old Coastguard makes a potent remedy for the stresses of a busy week.
