Much like the bitesize treats that mark the end of a refined meal, Petty Fours – a new intimate restaurant in Truro – is creative and packing a punch
Affordable luxury is the concept at chef-patron Alfie Petty’s new restaurant in Cornwall’s capital. While Alfie shies away from the term fine dining due to its elitist connotations, his dishes are meticulously crafted from seasonal ingredients. The major difference, however, is that the high-calibre cooking at Petty Fours doesn’t carry the usual fine dining price tag.
Petty creates a seasonally evolving set and tasting menu, both at a refreshingly affordable price and without any pomp or pretension. Plump for the sample set menu (two courses for £38 or three for £46) and feast on the likes of grilled Newlyn mackerel with fennel and celeriac to start, short-rib tortellini, mushrooms and beef broth for main, and chocolate delice with crème fraîche ice cream for pud. Exquisite petits fours always wrap up the meal, naturally.
Indulge in the tasting menu for £58 to taste Alfie’s cooking prowess and creativity. The chef earned his stripes at respected restaurants across the county including The Longstore in Truro and Falmouth’s Merchants Manor and, more recently, Adam Handling’s Ugly Butterfly Restaurant & Bar at Carbis Bay. At the helm of this 20-cover restaurant Alfie lets his imagination run wild – and the proof is in playful dishes like duck fat caramel white chocolate truffles, served to mimic rubber ducks.
His creations stand out against the restaurant’s clean and contemporary interior style and there’s even more visual intrigue with the chess-themed artwork adorning the walls, crafted by Alfie’s wife Tareg Petty. A global wine list of handpicked drops from small wineries, warm service and relaxed atmosphere further elevate the dining experience.
