The best places to eat, stay, shop and visit in the South West

Old Quay House, Fowey

Fowey’s chic n’ boutique hotel has just joined an international hotel set – sporting a refreshed dash of lux alongside the great food and wine

Having just been acquired by South African investment group, one could expect a safari themed overhaul, but fear not, the group has wisely kept the spirit of the 11 bedroom hotel, while refreshing the decor and adding some SA goodies to the wine list.

VISIT TO chill out on the waterside sun terrace to the gentle clinking of the moored boats. Obligatory requirements are a glass of good fizz which is easy here as the hotel’s Veuve Clicquot bar has the drinks covered  – and in style.

Mosey through for supper in the attractive restaurant where head chef Richard Massey, who has cooked at the hotel for two years, crafts elegant, modern European food.

DON’T VISIT  for a family break – unless your kids are grown up. Old Quay House is an indulgent experience for adults who want fine food and wine in smart maritime surroundings.

WE LIKED the nothing-is-too-much-trouble service from manager Martin Nicholas and team – they’ll even park your car and feed the meter.

Insider's tip

local lobster is on the menu every day, and dishes such as the porterhouse steak for two from top notch butchers Kittows is worth stumping up for. We also fell for the homemade limoncello and spiced rum in front of the fire at the end of the evening.
