The Luttrell Arms Hotel, Somerset

From its Exmoor National Park setting, The Luttrell Arms Hotel (pictured top) combines the best bits of country house hospitality with traditional dining pub charm. Four-poster beds, original fireplaces and luxurious linens mirror the manor-house experience, while the rustic bar serving hearty classics is an excellent example of of classic country-pub dining.

For a more formal experience, residents can book a table at Psalter’s Restaurant where head chef Barrie Tucker crafts thrilling a la carte dishes from local and seasonal ingredients. It’s also a fabulous spot for a decadent cream tea after a stomp on Exmoor.

Live & Let Live, Devon

South Devon is replete with fantastic restaurants, yet visitors staying at this modern pub with rooms could be tempted to “eat in” every night of their trip.

Chef patrons Yann and Olivier draw on their rural French backgrounds and careers in London to create truly exciting dishes which sing with flavour. Produce for the a la carte and sourdough pizza menus is sourced from within 25 miles of the pub wherever possible, so expect to find local hero ingredients such as Darts Farm beef, Brixham cuttlefish and Dartmoor venison on the line-up. The Sunday roasts are the stuff of local legend so make sure to book a table early if you want to tuck in to the likes of traditional Provençal fish soup, Darts Farm rolled-pork-belly with all the trimmings and the Live & Let Live tiramisu.

The New Inn, Cerne Abbas

A courtyard of boutique suites offers contemporary lodging for guests at this 16th-century coaching inn at the heart of Cerne Abbas. While the guestrooms in the original building have been carefully refurbished to reflect the historic setting (expect beamed ceilings, mullioned windows and period fireplaces), the luxury suites in the converted barns have a more modern vibe thanks to considered styling, roll-top baths and spacious living areas.

Whichever setting you choose, you won’t have to travel far for fantastic food and drink. The menu at The New Inn changes with the season and features hero local ingredients such as Portland crab, Dorset lamb and Fossil Farm sirloin. The likes of classic fish and chips and smoked ham hock terrine are joined by creative dishes such as cod with nori, smoked potato, celeriac fondant, celery and pickled samphire.

The Fontmell, Dorset

This foodie pub on the Dorset/Wiltshire border is the perfect spot at which to spend a long weekend exploring the wild British countryside. Two dining rooms, naturally split by a brook which runs through The Fontmell, offer the option of causal bar dining or more refined feasting. There’s also a wood-fired oven outside spitting out seriously good pizza for alfresco diners.

Everything from sausages rolls to beetroot-cured salmon to freshly baked bread is made from scratch in The Fontmell kitchen using locally sourced ingredients. Stay the night in one of six contemporary bedrooms above the pub and you’ll be treated to a hearty English breakfast featuring homemade sausages and local free-range eggs.

The Victoria Inn, Cornwall

This bubblegum-pink pub’s position just off the South West Coast Path makes it hugely popular with walkers seeking rest and refreshment. When the weather’s fine, the roomy courtyard buzzes with chatter and the clinking of glasses. In winter, patrons are tempted to stick around for a post-dinner drink by the roaring open fire.

Three contemporary bedrooms above The Victoria Inn allow visitors to fully explore the great wine list and collection of Cornish ales and ciders at the bar. Ask the friendly team for their match to your pick of the daily-changing menu. Chef manager Matthew Rowe creates simple seasonal dishes using the best of Cornish ingredients – think whole baked-fish with lemon gremolata and Cornish earlies, and crispy chicken thigh and cuttlefish fritters.
