The Cary Arms & Spa, Devon

Nothing says British summertime like a trip to the seaside and the self-catering accommodation at The Cary Arms & Spa (pictured top) on the English Riviera ticks all the boxes.

Evoking the classic charm of the traditional British beach holiday, The Cary Arms has seven newly renovated seaside cottages with a choice two, three, four or five bedrooms. Each cottage has stunning coastal views, gorgeous interior design by Kathleen Fraser and a spacious terrace with barbecue for alfresco feasting. However, arguably the best bit is their location just a hop, skip and a jump from the water.

On arrival, guests are treated to a delicious hamper of goodies including bread, butter, milk, snacks, tea and those all-important pods for the Nespresso machine. You can also enjoy the bar, restaurant and private areas of the main hotel including the saloon, gardens and spa.

Polurrian on the Lizard, Cornwall

With awe-inspiring panoramic views across the Atlantic and its own beach, Polurrian on the Lizard is the perfect place for a summer getaway.

The hotel has six three-bedroom self-catering villas, each sleeping up to six guests. All of the villas have a sheltered garden with a table and chairs, ideal for alfresco dining. Alternatively, you can book a table at the hotel restaurant and indulge in wood-fired pizzas and Mediterranean-inspired dishes.

Visitors can also take advantage of the outdoor swimming pool, tennis courts, health club and Elemis spa.

Bovey Castle, Devon

Olympic gold medallist Tom Daley got married at Bovey Castle, the historic 275-acre estate known for its 18-hole golf course and outdoor pursuits. Follow in the diver’s footsteps and hire one of the private lodges which boast beautiful views over the rolling Devon countryside. Each lodge has three en suite bedrooms and a kitted-out kitchen, and you can even take your four-legged friends along for your stay.

When it comes to dining, you can get the gang involved in a cooking group session or have meals delivered direct to your lodge. Or, if you fancy stretching your legs, head over to the castle for a meal at Smith’s Brasserie, which offers a Mediterranean-inspired menu, or the more formal Great Western Grill for refined dining.

Lucknam Park, Wiltshire

Considered one of the best foodie staycation destinations in the UK, Lucknam Park is the home of Michelin-starred Restaurant Hywel Jones.

As well as gorgeous bedrooms, the hotel also hosts a range of luxury self-catering cottages, with three- and four-bedroom options available and a soon-to-open one-bedroom cottage for couples. Each cottage is uniquely different and dressed in a classic British country style, creating an polished yet homely vibe.

Guests have access to all of Lucknam Park’s facilities including the spa, equestrian centre, Restaurant Hywel Jones, The Brasserie and children’s hideaway. There’s even a helicopter pad should you wish to fly in for the weekend.

Barnsley House, Cotswolds

Situated in a picture-perfect Cotswolds village, Home Farm Cottage is the ultimate country house retreat. Guests at this three-bedroom self-catering cottage on the grounds of Barnsley House get to enjoy all the hotel’s spoils (gorgeous gardens, a private cinema room, spa facilities and access to electric bikes) but with the additional space and comfort of a self-catering stay.

The cottage has a roomy Cotswold kitchen stocked with fresh milk, freshly baked bread and farmyard eggs, but if you don’t feel like cooking you can stroll over to The Village Pub for a traditional pub supper. Or, if you’re after something a little fancier, The Potager restaurant offers exquisite fine dining.
