Real ales and relaxation at Driftwood Spars

Quench your thirst for a coastal mini break with a visit to this Cornish brewpub
Driftwood Spars

Craving an ocean fix? Head to St Agnes to immerse yourself in seaside pursuits before refuelling and relaxing at Driftwood Spars on the Cornish coast

The first sip of a pint is rarely more refreshing than when preceded by a bracing outdoor activity. Whether it’s surfing, swimming or an invigorating coastal hike that musters up your thirst, you can rest assured that a visit to Driftwood Spars in St Agnes will quench it.

This charming brewpub and B&B by the sea is a lively, yet cosy, haven to retreat to for a coastal mini break. Not only is the briny blue mere yards from its doorstep, but it also has an in-house microbrewery where you can learn all about crafting the perfect beer as well as stock up on your faves to take home.

Driftwood Spars prides itself on its sustainability creds. The pub has the lowest beer miles imaginable as the brewery is literally across the road. The team use English-grown hops and often forage for interesting ingredients to add to their small-batch specials, and a pilot brew kit is used for experimentation on micro releases of more radical brews. There’s always a great selection of cask and keg beers available to try – the tasting board of three is a good way to roadtest the range.

Beer not your bag? No need to worry. The brewpub’s bar is stocked with all manner of tipples and alcohol-free tipples, including wine from Old Chapel Cellars, the first wine merchant in the UK to be certified as a B Corp.

As well as the environment, the Driftwood team champion the community where they live and encourage their guests to do the same. Join the locals for a dip at the weekend, take part in a beach clean, grab lunch from the brewpub, local bakery or deli, buy beers from the microbrewery (which donates a share of its profits to Fathoms Free – a cleaner oceans charity), charge your vehicle at the electric charging points, and relish the thrill of how your mini break can make a positive impact.

Follow a day’s outdoor adventure or beer experimentation with a hearty meal in Driftwood Spars dining room (which, FYI, has stunning sea views). Chef Tom Bennetts crafts an array of scrumptious specials from Cornwall’s abundant coastal larder. There are also trusty pub favourites such as juicy Philip Warren burgers, a Cornish Ploughman’s and Driftwood Spars’ ale-battered fish and chips to keep hunger at bay.
